In our experience these are the single biggest causes of your site being hacked:
- Failure To Update
- Someone did something dumb on your end
Most hackers aren’t really hackers. They are opportunist that exploit a preventable situation. With the three noted reasons above these hackers exploit the site and gain control of your site.
Why Hack My Site?
Good question. In the grand scheme of things your site is likely not all that important. It isn’t holding state secrets and it isn’t a bank’s or some database of consumers data but if you think that makes you safe you’re wrong. The vast majority of sites hacked in my experience were done so because … its practice and or its a game. They might get one point for your site and once they’ve hacked it they’ll add a page on your site that tells everyone in the game that the site is theirs now. It serves as excellent practice and training.
If you’re going to hack a big bank site do you just hack a big bank site on day one? Not really, you need to build a front of computers and sites not tied to you, that you control. A bot-network … is a collection of unrelated sites, not necessarily owned or run by the same entity but exploited by hackers and used at will to take part in attacking large target sites.
Recently we ran a test on a client’s server to show him how easy it was for someone to hack his site without knowing how to code. Within 10 minutes we’d begun. It takes a computer about a minute to submit 36 different guesses at a password. Password lists are available online that include the top 1 million passwords people use. To reach a million tries that takes about 540 hours. If you’re active and monitoring your site you can catch them. But if they control 100 other people’s sites and tell them to join in on the attack it now only takes 5 hours. So … thats why your site was hacked, to become a zombie attacking other targets..
How Do I Stop Hackers?
You do the same things to stop burglars. You make it look like someone’s home. Update your blog regularly, log into the site and update the plugins and WordPress versions. Those updates are for a purpose and usually its because someone discovered a security flaw. You protect your home possibly with a security system, well you should have security plugins on your site too. These will stop hackers 90% of the time. I often log into hacked sites and find a security plugin that was turned off. Thats the third bullet point above, someone on your end did something they shouldn’t have. Maybe it was slowing down their image uploads or whatever reason but they made the site vulnerable.
