2020 ULTIMATE SEO PBN GUIDE

SEO PBN

Whats a PBN?

Private Blog Networks or PBNs have a vilified reputation of being “black hat SEO” but this is a poor way of looking at an SEO tool still used by many just by other names.

Google Search Operator

SEO Research – Easy Smart Searches Using Google Operators

Searching is a lot more complex than typing a word and shifting through results.  Using Google Search Operators, predefined instructions that focus the results anyone can gain insights into Google’s thoughts. SEO Research: Getting To What Google Really Knows SEO Research often begins and ends with one randomly found site’s auto audit. There are hundreds of sites that will tell you the character count of this field and that.  These are all good and well but they aren’t intelligent and offer a glimpse of how that tool sees your site, not Google.  In the end do you want to get an A grade by a random SEO tool or do you want to rank higher on Google?  These are not the same goals often. Using Google Search Operators you can extract a focused image of your site.  Here’s a fast example, how many pages has Google indexed from your site?  You may have 100 blog posts but thats not the answer here.  You can setup and use Google Search Console, and you should, but a quick way to answer this in the moment is: site: ultimateseo.org Above we can easily see that Google has indexed 2,650 pages of ultimateseo.org.  Thats great, its a broad selection of pages that Google has to chose from to match with search queries.  Using site: allows you to search just that site. SEO Strategy – How To Use Google Googles a search engine as we already know.  It indexes and tries to make sense of your site’s content.  Having an orderly site helps Google do this but even without that order Google has a lot to offer you in data and knowledge about your site, it’s ranking and competitors. Google Search Operators “keyword or phrase” – this searches for only the exact match.  So this would return all pages with keyword or phrase on it.  Note the or is not OR so its part of the phrase. -“keyword” – this removes pages with that keyword site: – searches just that site. inurl: – searches the url for a term * – is a wildcard intitle: keyword – searches in the page meta title. Intext:keyword – searches the page text for the keyword Link:keyword – pages with a link using a keyword in the anchor text. allinanchor: – allows you to find pages with the term in the inbound anchor text. daterange: – shows pages added during a date range loc: – results in a location Related:domain.com – note the R is capitalized.  These are pages that are similar to the domain homepage. OR – Searches both terms independently (keyword OR keyword2) – Parentheses groups search criteria and prioritizes it when added with additional criteria. filetype: – searches files, not just html text. Combining Search Operators The real fun begins when we begin to combine multiple operators to build more complex searches. site:urlofpost intext:”keyword” site:domain.com -site:domain.net keyword – searches all pages on one domain thats a .com that are not on another that is a .net …

301 Redirects Of Expired Domains – What SEOs Don’t Tell Ya

Wouldn’t it be so much easier to just buy a site thats similar to yours and redirect all their backlinks to yourself … you might try pointing them to relevant content or simply to your homepage.  I do that.  One such domains is SEOGurl.com, no I’m not a gurl but I support more women in tech and I do SEO.  I also have SEOBoys.net.  Both domains were active for someone else who has since let them go, but they still had a wealth of backlinks. I’ve lead clients to try it with great results.  But it seems black ops and the more prolific SEO channels out there generally ignore redirecting old domains, sometimes called “drop domains” or they discourage it. Consider Yoast … they are the SEO plugin, hands down number one in page optimization on a WordPress site.  Their blog then largely is widely accepted and they have said relatively nothing on the matter … but would it surprise you to learn they actually do it themselves?  Something they do but they’ve never made a blog post about it. Heres a video I made where I show others redirecting backlinks from now functionally defunct sites to their homepage. Now what?  Well so now you need to learn what sites to register and to redirect.  This involves a minor audit of the site first.   You have to consider that the backlinks weren’t enough for one reason or another to keep these sites afloat.  So don’t get me wrong, this is not the magic bullet. It is just another tool in the SEO tool box.  Knowing which ones are value, which are nothing and which are toxic is tricky.  But thats another video …

Shawn Reilly And Political SEO

Political SEO Case Study: Louisville Metro Council Website

Highlands Campaign Site A site that I was lucky to work on during this 2020 election was that of Shawn Reilly, a candidate for Louisville Metro Council District 8.   The site is aesthetically pleasing, the candidate picked out a good template for that.  The template does incorporate some oddities in its coding and utilizes a page builder that was new to me.  Elementor remains my go to favorite page builder and is widely used, this template uses Bold Builder which reminds me a little bit of King or WP Page Bakery. The page builder can be unintuitive and clunky at times requiring creative fixes and CSS hacks.  Ultimately though I’d say the page builder is neither an asset or a liability for this theme. Reillyforcouncil.com wasn’t my preferred domain name, I prefer the candidate’s name but I joined the effort after the initial decisions were made, including the web host. Coronavirus and 2020 Election The COVID-19 pandemic has had an effect on the election.  The way it is carried out and the date have had to adapt.  The candidate created a smart section to the site about this new factor in the election.  A Coronavirus resource page for Louisville called Highlands Strong is now up and running.   This resource may eclipse the typical draw on a campaign site such as the Issues page which outlines the candidates causes for the Highlands neighborhood. This candidate site has been an exception to my past ones with a more involved candidate and that has translated into a less controlled environment for me.  You might think a more involved client is better but generally in SEO the more centralized the decision making process with an SEO the better the results for the site.  Where a candidate might know his or her message to voters, the SEO knows how to get Google to deliver that message to the intended voters. Shawn Reilly Is A Doer The candidate for Louisville’s Metro Council race is a doer.  He’s know as a hands on neighborhood champion and that message was the primary focus.   It’s been evident in past news articles such as when Shawn did the city’s neglected work and paved a pothole.  This grass roots can do mentality may be great for a councilman.   He’s experienced in local politics and serves as the president of a neighborhood association within the Highlands. Notice that the site receives an A in PageSpeed.  As I have noted to many clients this is not telling you that the site has a good page speed.  This just reflects how much optimization is incorporated on the metrics that GTMetrix reviews.  It can be said then that this site is optimized and the page speed won’t be improved through more optimization. I prefer for SEO efforts to have the site on a VPS cloud server but the site is hosted on a shared plan, much like most clients begin with these are budget options but tend to come with speed …

Directory Sites

Directory Site Backlinks

Directory sites are a valid and important source of backlinks.  Is your site listed in the Yellowpages?  Isit registered with the BBB?  The BBB is actually an excellent backlink source.  Local SEO also relies heavily on directory sites.  Often noted as “Citations” for you to out rank in local search you should be listed on Yelp.com, Google My Business the list goes on and on.  Your local chamber of commerce is also an excellent source of backlinks  these all help establish legitimacy for your site and help Google rank the local options available for users searches. To that end directory sites are worth the effort todayand in 2020.  Not all sites are equal but the more the merrier.  Below are directory sites we run, you may submit a listing free! SEO Metrics

What’s Trust And Authority Using CF TF AS DR DP DA DS In SEO Metrics

Back in the early days of SEO (2000-2010) Google used “Page Rank” which was a number that was 1-10, the higher the rank the better the site would do when ranking keywords.  As is the story in SEO, every time folks get something thats useful they go to far and it gets the Google penalty smash down.  Page Rank was no longer shared with us, to prevent websites from just trying to learn the test and not trying to make the site good for users.A vacuum forms though when you take something away, and others were happy to fill that with, mostly just guesses.  Big difference now though is that the numbers go all the way to 100! SEO Metrics: DA DS DR DT CF TF DP AS and domain authority ranking. If the title confuses you don’t worry. Id expect even intermediate SEOs are not familiar with all of those letters. Domain Authority or DA is a well established SEO metric by Moz.com that many often confuse with Google’s ranking of keywords.  Lets just remind everyone interested in their DA …that it has NOTHING to do with Google’s search results.  It MAY be based on some of the same similar metrics as Google uses but its just a number someone other than Google guessed. What are the other SEO Metrics? Domain Authority Alternatives DS – Domain Score by SEMRush DR – Domain Rank DP – Domain Pop DT – Domain Trust by SEMRush AS – Authority Score by SEMRush TF – Trust Flow by Majestic CF – Citation Flow by Majestic Moz Spam – Is Another Moz Metric What about PA – Page Authority?  Who really knows cause it is still Moz1.0.  Moz1.0 is me referencing the time before DA was updated using a new formula.  Moz called it DA 2.0, but I think needing a 2.0 is an admission that you got it wrong in the first place.  Page Authority on the homepage used to match the site’s DA.  In fact, if you want to know the DA 1.0 of a domain just go by the PA of the homepage.  They used to be one in the same.  So PA is closely related to a number they felt the need to redo. That paragraph is confusing, but that is the point.  DA over simplifies a complex question with a single number.  People like a single number but that does not mean it is very accurate or reliable. For a more in depth look at each ranking we’ve included the SEO Metrics category from our FAQ section. Continuing into metric land there’s seemingly easy scores that you’d be wrong to expect to be equal. Backlinks are reported by Moz, SEMRush, AHREFs and Majestic. Each offers its own number to quantify the value of a site. Usually these numbers are wildly different, but how could they be different if they all are based on the same site? Keep in mind that the sites that report these numbers are making crawls …

Technical SEO: Digital Ocean vs Google Cloud vs AWS

This post originally only focused on cost and user experience when we reviewed DigitalOcean vs AWS vs Google Cloud.  After a real world case study and experiment we have some performance data and it is actually surprising.Digital Ocean vs AWSBefore testing servers I recall stating in a conference call “We all know AWS is gonna win, but ya we can test it.”  As a client’s IT team wanted to move our project team’s DigitalOcean web server on to one platform.Teaser here … in a head to head test between Digital Ocean vs AWS one of these  two out performed the other in:
  1. rate of requests handled
  2. number of requests processed
  3. time it took to process each request.
  4. The same winner of those also won 10 / 10 page speed tests and the results were not close.
The results of these tests convinced a previously skeptical client’s IT team into adopting the team’s choice in cloud providers.Scroll down to the section “VPS Performance” to see more about that specific use case scenario, or click the blue button just below.  Ultimate SEO has accounts on all but Azure and has powered its servers from AWS, Google Cloud and Digital Ocean at some point.  We’ve consolidated to one provider and it’s the same one who performs best in these tests.Want to see a spoiler (the answer)?  Here is a summary sentence of our tests, or read on and learn why and how they win. PBN, GuestPost or Syndication for Backlink Building

Backlink BuildingWe can spend all day optimizing our pages for keywords that we researched for days and never rank content on Google Search.  Its just the cold hard fact that in SEO onpage optimization is the easiest thing and it used to work in the 1990s … heck back then you could keyword stuff and just repeat the same phrase enough in the background and you’d get some traction.  Yes, SEO is dead … if thats the SEO you are using.Backlinks moved in and added some credence to the claims that our content should rank for this or that keyword.  It made sense, each site that links to you with the anchor text including your keyword was that site basically vouching for your content.  If thats all you think backlinks are then … Yes, SEO is dead … simply having a ton of links to your site isn’t a sure fire way to demonstrate that your content is rank worthy anymore.Backlinks created a storm of opportunity in SEO for gaming the system and stacking the deck.  I love telling people about the Google Bomb Miserable Failure and how it defined George Bush in 2004.  Or the story of the downfall of JCPenny who mysteriously ranked number one for all manner of their products until Google took manual action and basically they have never recovered.  Those bring me to these games we developed in an effort to fool Google into making us number one in SERPs.Link Building SchemesEverything I’m going to mention below in this discussions is a link building scheme.  Just like buying multiple domains and having them all for one business, some call it a multi-domain strategy, all of these are understood to be below the belt with Google penalties in the wait.  But thats not exactly true, I strongly think theres a time and place for each of these tools today and they do all still work, it’s how you use them and why.Anything done to increase backlinks is a link building scheme, thats basically the definition of it.  Which is why I roll my eyes when a client is interviewing me for backlink building and says “white hat only” … that means content improvement only.  Otherwise its all a scheme for building backlinks.PBN Private Blog Networks in 2019Backlinks are not dead.  You just cant have links pointing to you from irrelevant sites that have no purpose or traffic anymore.  Thats actually good and its making searches useful again. But what you may call a PBN may be a workshop for testing, what if I as a high school english teacher assigned my 150 students to create blogs and made their homework to discuss the assigned books I’ve given them for the year?  They’ll all point to the same links likely.  Is that a Private Blog Network?  If you feel it is then are we saying that the students work, their content, is not going to be of value to someone else searching for that same book?In the easiest …

Sex, Speed And The SEO Migration of Romantic Depot to WordPress

Romantic Depot operates six, soon to be seven adult stores offering sex toys and lingerie, in the New York City area. Their flagship stores are in Manhattan and the Bronx. Ultimate SEO was proud to work with them on their initial migration to WordPress, an additional migration of a second store site combined with the main site and content expansion. They’ve been around for some time and over the years their website aged along with other businesses sites. The goal of their site was to help drive local foot traffic, but a growing mobile population made their html desktop site seem antiquated. With the move to mobile devices here to stay, the old RomanticDepot.com site was not responsive and needed replacing. It was an HTML static site that required manual editing and didn’t display well on a mobile phone. This lead the owner of the chain to build a new site that was mobile friendly and it lead to my involvement overseeing the process of migrating to this new mobile site without hurting the site’s strong local SEO presence. Keywords: Branded And Unbranded Romantic Depot does have an impressive keyword positioning presence in the New York City area. Even nationally they are on page 2 of results for “sex shop“. The goal was to ensure a smooth transition to the mobile site while maintaining the SEO that had been built over the years. The site’s keywords did present opportunities for overall improvement. While the store name, a branded keyword, was well associated with the site, the product names were not. So someone searching for the store name found it easily but searching for unbranded keywords were not necessarily productive. The problem this presented was that customers had to already know about the store to find the site. 301 Redirects The new site was largely a 1 to 1 ratio. The HTML static page manhattan.HTML went now to /manhattan/ on the WordPress site. We placed in any one off redirects, a redirect that took any URL that ended in.HTML and would return it without the HTML and a redirect for the index.HTML homepage to come back with the WordPress homepage at /. Backlinks Preserved Backlinks are the lifeblood of a site’s ranking and it was important to ensure that those would be maintained with relevant content as well. Using SEMRush.com we collected all of the backlinks and their existing targets and ensured those had rules as well. While the site’s backlinks were in the tens of thousands it quickly came down to a few hundred target urls that needed to be accounted for to maintain SEO. Site Speed Most of the work involved in preparing for the migration was speed performance in nature. The new site when tested on GTMetrix.com was loading in 12.6 seconds with over 400 http requests. We targeted a 3 second load and through Cloudflare.com we were able to utilize a CDN that brought the site closer to users as well as offered other benefits. Cloudflare alone …

PBN

Managing And Maintaining A PBN

PBNs in 2019 can be just as effective as they once were if properly maintained and staged.  Mimicing an organic site goes a long way in the stability of your PBN. Additional Private Blog Network Resources: SEO PBN – Collection of all our SEO Articles on PBNs PBN Videos For Finding Expired Domains Backlinks and Auto Posting Maintaining A PBN It started off simple enough every week I’d search through expiring domains and pick up a couple cheap .org domains and spent about $7 bucks on two. I’d build my sites out individually and define a purpose to them and make them fully functional sites and move on.  But no one does that who is running just one site.  You return to the site and you improve it, add content, run updates and make sure it hasn’t been hacked. This continued for 2 or 3 months in 2018 and before I knew it I had a hundred domains.  But I didn’t really…because the oldest sites were usually hacked or outdated plugins would shut off removing functionality.  SSL certs may have expired in any regard there are a lot of things out there ready to shut your site down. Basically the older the site the longer it had been left to its own devices, the more likely it was down. Just monitoring whats up and down is a chore.  Sure you can check 1 or 2 sites, but I figured out if I spent 15 per site I’d need 25 hours per hundred sites.  Thats where its important to consider managing and maintaining your PBN early on, and I’ll share some tips here. Autoblogging A PBN You simply cant just make a site with 4 pages and link to yourself.  Your sites built from expired domains only have value because of their backlinks and you need a functioning site that people can find some value to visiting to retain those links.  Site traffic is also an important aspect of a site’s value to you as a backlink source. Maintaining original content on a PBN of over 100 sites is also not practical. Autoblogging or Syndicated content is the next best thing,  You should still have a uniqueness to your site.  That may be that the syndicated content while from other sites is a mix that only your site has available. For instance say your site is about parks.  RSS feeds from all of the major park systems can create a unique blend of content thats greater than the individual sites but still auto generated. RSS content should be clearly labeled as such, with a link back to the original source to avoid plagiarism. When creating an RSS Aggregator site I use the following:
  1. CyberSEO Lite
  2. WPA Auto Links
  3. WP-Cerber
Breaking down the plugins and there settings … CyberSEO The CyberSEO (formerly CyberSyn) plugin settings ensure the content is full text, if possible, link to their source, create thumbnails that are not hot linking, use a date older than the …

Link Building: Redirecting Expired Domains Backlinks

Link building is one of the harder  aspects of SEO and because of this one of the least done. Unfortunately it is many times more powerful than anything you do to your page and content.  No level of optimization of content will trump the power of well placed relevant backlinks. Its so hard few ever do it, and those same people probably say that “SEO is dead.”  It is if all you’re doing is keyword optimization.  75% of what decides the results for a search have nothing to do with what is on the page. Expired Domain Backlinks Every day thousands of domains expire.  The owner just didnt renew it, maybe they forgot it.  Whatever the reason the domain is now available to anyone for registering again.  But what happens to all those pages on the internet that linked to that expired domain?  Nothing usually….each site would have to go through and update their own conten. As a site owner you can probably understand that means the bcklinks of an expired domain usually remain active.  This link building strategy involves you purchsing that domain, then redirecting the existing backlinks to your relevant content.  This video series walks you through three steps.  First, finding the expired domain. Second, reviewing the domain anchor text.  Third, setting those redirects to your site. For more info on assessing a site’s value continue reading after the videos below under the SEO Site Audit header. Video 1 – Finding and sorting through expired domains All links below, open in a new window. You’ll use expireddomains.net in this video.  Other resources are available, but this is the one I use that is free.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jbGfPYlvAWE Video 2 – Assessing the expired domains use through anchor text. You’ll use SEMrush.com to review the anchor text of a site’s backlinks.  SEMRush does cost monthly to use but you can ret the free trial.  There are other sites available as well but for the value I prefer SEMRush for backlink auditing..https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C5MjuuSM648 Video 3 – Setting up 301 Redirects to your site You’ll use a cPanel hosting account provided by many hosting companies.  Ultimate SEO Hosting is our hosting solution offering these capabilities for a few dollars a month. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KyKVriqXsHs&t=1s 301 Redirects Transfer 100% SEO Google’s John Mueller shared how Google passes 100% of “PageRank” with 301 redirects now.  This is an update and change to the policy which used to cause a 10% penalty. They don’t always pass PageRank though.  You can’t redirect backlinks for a bakery to your political campaign site for instance.  Redirects should also be assigned on a 1:1 ratio.  So redirecting all 404 errors to your homepage will not make your homepage any better on Google.  But redirecting a link that used to go to an article about Search Engines to an article about Search Engines should be fine.   You can read SearchEngineJournal.com’s take on this as well.SEO Site AuditUltimateseo.org has a DA 19, that seems pretty low. But keep in mind it used to be a DA 40 before Moz changed it’s scoring. Keep also …

Search Engine Ranking: Website Ranking Keywords Backlinks And All

In several previous articles we’ve covered: Domain Auditing, Page Speed And SEO, Backlinks and even some less than white hat techniques such as Private Blog Networks, Guest Posts and more.  All of these are cogs in the greater overall machine which is Search Engine Optimization or SEO.  To you and any other website owner it is Search Engine Position Ranking.    In this article we’re going to look more holistically at the sum of the parts and how it fits together.Search Engine Marketing Vs Search Engine OptimizationSEO is not Search Engine Marketing, or SEM. It is closely related but very different.  In the end both mean to drive relevant traffic to a site but in different, often at odds means.  SEM includes Pay Per Click or PPC traffic, but can also include more paid traffic channels.I’d argue that a good SEM landing page is an awful SEO landing page.  SEO pages may have a lot of content on them but they are structured in a specific a deliberate manner with everything falling neatly under the page’s topical subject.PPC requires none of that and its page structure is more geared with conversion in mind.  A good SEO is not necessarily a good SEM and vice versa someone with PPC experience is not an SEO.  I only lay it out like that because I’ve worked for sites where a SEM’s decisions hindered the SEO efforts but they served the PPC interests just fine.SERPs or Search Engine Rank Position directly translates into increased traffic on your site.  Both SEM and SEO deliver relevant traffic, because you’re able to place yourself in front of people actively researching a topic related to you.  PPC the costs are upfront and the benefit is immediate but not recyclable. SEM the costs are ongoing, the results are delayed by a few weeks but the work is self renewing.  Once a person finds your site SEO isn’t used up … it can continue to deliver traffic day after day with minimal upkeep.Search Engine RankingRanking number 1 is every webmasters dream for their desired keywords.  I’d love to rank number one for Matthew Leffler but I’m in tough competition from 3 other Matthew Lefflers.  A tennis pro, a lawyer and a sex offender all dance with me in the top positions. Now I dont want to make light of what got someone into the position of being on a sex offender site but I will say that its proven to be some of the best SEO out there. The attorney and the sex offender are beating the SEO and tennis Matthew Lefflers Positions change in SERPs often and reflect the ever changing nature of the web. Website Ranking Website Ranking is the goal of most SEO clients and for good reason.  Web Traffic is directly correlated with where your website is ranked for a keyword.  In studies it has been shown that the top three positions will win about half of all the traffic for a given search term.   Each position earns …

The static portions are cached on our servers for a short period of time, typically less than 2 hours before we check to see if they’ve been updated. By automatically moving the static parts of your site closer to your visitors, the overall performance of your site improves significantly. CloudFlare’s intelligent caching system also means you save bandwidth, which means saving money, and decreases the load on your servers, which means your web application will run faster and more efficiently than ever. On average, CloudFlare customers see a 60% decrease in bandwidth usage, and a 65% in total requests to their servers. The overall effect is that CloudFlare will typically cut the load time for pages on your site by 50% which means higher engagement and happier visitors. Broad web security Over the course of 2011, CloudFlare identified a 700% increase in the number of distributed denial of service attacks [link to http://blog.cloudflare.com/2011-the-year-of-the-ddos] (DDoS) we track on the Internet (see the chart below). As attacks like these increase, CloudFlare is stepping up to protect sites. CloudFlare’s security protections offer a broad range of protections [link to http://www.cloudflare.com/features-security] against attacks such as DDoS, hacking or spam submitted to a blog or comment form. What is powerful about our approach is that the system gets smarter the more sites that are part of the CloudFlare community. We analyze the traffic patterns of hundreds of …

AWS Vs. Digital Ocean: Costs, Performance, Features For Cloud Computing | Clear Winner

Why I Made The Switch To Digital Ocean And You Should Too After a year of ballooning costs I stumbled across Digital Ocean an figured I’d try their $5 VPS server and compare it to my Amazon Web Services experience. Astonishing… Digital Ocean quickly grabbed my attention with the straight forward ease of use. I had a working cPanel server in less than 20 minutes. They make the entry into Cloud Computing easy with a 1 CPU 1 GB Ram server that has 25GB SSD and 1000GB Transfer …. also included was 2 external IP Addresses and the Ability to create a firewall protecting my servers. That cost $5 a month. Jaw dropping I exclaim the AWS price is $5 just for the two IP addresses! I should have made an apples to apples comparison but at that moment I was off. My AWS Configuration And Cost:
  • 2 t2.medium 2 CPUs with 4 GB Ram Each having 100GB SSD
  • 1 t3.medium 2 CPU with 4GB Ram with 100GB SSD
  • 6 external IP addresses for these
  • I used 170GB of data transfer.
Grand Total For April: $167.83 In April here’s the bill from AWS. I’d note that my three servers take advantage of Reserved Instance pricing…I get a discount because I signed a contract to rent the servers for at least a year.   So fr in 2019 I’ve spent $500 with AWS. I hate their billing detail… Now Digital Ocean … heres my configuration
  • 4CPU 8GB Ram 80GB SSD + 100GB SSD Volume
  • 2CPu 4GB Ram 80GB SSD
  • 2CPu 4GB Ram 80GB SSD
  • 2CPU 4GB Ram 80GB SSD
  • 2CPu 4GB Ram 80GB SSD
  • 2CPu 4GB Ram 80GB SSD
  • 12 IP Addresses
  • 170GB Transfered
As you can see I added 3 servers and gave one server 2 times the standard configuration I usually use. So what might we expect? I went from 3 servers to 7 roughly. (counting the bigger server just as two servers) $132.77 I more than doubled the resources I consumed at AWS at $167 to pay less at $132. Its easy to see why…compare Apples to Apples   AWS 2 CPU 4GBSSD =$12.96 2 IP Addresses=$2.05 100 GB SSD= $13 Snapshot=$4 Data Transfer=$3.75 Total: $35.76 Digital Ocean 2 CPU 4GBSSD =$20 2 IP Addresses=$0 80 GB SSD= $0 Snapshot=$1 Data Transfer=$0 Total: $21Not only is it cheaper but there are just less nickel and dime aspects.  No use having a server without an address!  Or a hard drive … or data transfering!  So It’s one item. Performance wise its identical, I have no observable difference in performance other than the same number of hosted sites are now housed on twice the resources. Now there are some things to note in AWS’s corner … I could have more than 2 IP Addresses if I wanted … but I just want 2 per server so no issue.  Its just simpler, more transparent and significantly cheaper to use Digital Ocean over AWS.    It’s also worth …

building a pbn site

Creating A PBN Network Part 4: The Site Needs A Story

Creating a PBN or Private Blog Network is likely more difficult that just focusing on your content and the value it offers visitors. In this post we’ll examine what you need to have on the site and how it should be structured. In previous posts we’ve discussed: Creating A Private Blog Network: PBNs In 2019 For SEO PBNs 2019 – Domain Detailing – Picking Expired Domains And 301 Redirects Auto Posting Across Social Media Platforms – IFTTT – Buffer.com Domain Name Register – PBNs In Mind – Namesilo.com Every Site Needs A Backstory Because every organic real site has one. If you decide before you create the site what it is and who made it then you’ll be able to create a site that will serve your PBN well. I’ve made site’s as if it were a school assignment in music and communication, or I’ve built a medical conference site that happened years ago but continues to update it’s site with follow up articles. I’ve built news magazine sites that promise to focus on local news that matters. Each site has an intended audience and justifies its existence. Be creative and shake up the site’s purpose, play with the name. One site I had was aidusa.website I built a site seeking international aid for the USA because of the state of politics and our national debt. I noted our poverty levels, healthcare challenges and violence on the streets. It kinda made some sense after you look at it. That site could easily then harbor a backlink for a charity, healthcare site, legal site or a news site. Regularly Updates If you own one site and its this site your building you’re going to update it at least every month right? Its something you’re passionate about and you’ll find the regular updates will attract regular visits from search engines. This doesn’t scale well when we think about 10 sites or 100 sites … 1000 sites. You’ll need to read up on our Auto Blogging ideas in another article that we posted a while back. Link Placement Avoid … just don’t … place a link in the header or the footer or the sidebar of the site to another site. Your main “real” site doesn’t do that I bet. Why would this site? Keep money links to your target site in content. Define your site with anchor text that is relevant to the keywords you are pursuing. Who’s Behind The Site And The Ability To Contact Them I know what your favorite word is … or at least statistically speaking I do. It is your name. Humans love to talk about themselves and they like to take credit for something they’ve done. Websites aren’t much different. So it looks odd when a site gives no information about the person or group behind it. The About Us section is important and just like on your money site or the important site … you need a means to contact the owner. A simple contact …

On Page SEO Just Doesn’t Rank Keywords like Backlinks

I wanna share a graphic I ran across online with you today. Keywords Or Backlinks? Invest your time in backlinks. According to this one if you want to impact your SEO standing all of the On Page Factors combined don’t reach even half the power of the Domains Backlinks and the Page’s Backlinks. I often have clients who comb over their sites day after day tweaking the words on the page with bold or moving them to a header and if they spent 1/4 of that time trying to attract other sites to link to them they’d get 5 times the result. Its one thing to say your the best, its a totally different thing if someone else says your the best. Or if someone says you’re the worst it really doesn’t matter how many times or ways you say you’re the best. It’s logical too…if you meet a person for the first time and they boldly proclaim how great they are to you, but someone else warns you that they’re full of it … what are you going to think? Keyword Ranking Factors We’ve discussed this a few times in other articles but when looking over the Upwork SEO projects its evident that few people understand this concept. Read: How To Rank On Google Your page is defined by the link that lead Google to you. Sure working on the headers and img alt tags are useful, but only to support what your backlinks are saying. Anchor text is the real keyword of search engines. This link to the best upwork SEO profile is more important than anything I put on that page …

DA AS TF Domain SEO

Is A Site Low Level? DA vs CF vs TF … DR, DS, AS, TS and more!

This article speaks in terms of whether you should scrap a site and just 301 backlinks to another if it is performing poorly. But it speaks to what IS performing poorly. There is also another article more recently written all about SEO Metrics that might serve as a good read after you consider this article’s points. Whats A Good DA TF CF DS DR? Alright so I’m going to attempt to answer this the way you want. A number…but before I do lets say its a subjective question. Its literally like asking a friend who is the hottest actor or actress alive today. How many sites are on the internet? 1.5 billion. I cant look up all their DAs. So lets form a couple groups that we don’t pick who is in it. First off we can use Moz’s numbers but thats not scientific. Moz Claims The Average DA By Industry Is: 86.2 Media & Publishing 78.6 Higher Education 75.5 Sports And Entertainment 71.2 Accommodation And Food Service 67.5 Software and Applications 67.5 Healthcare 67.0 Business Services 64.6 Retail 64.0 Consumer Goods 63.1 Construction Products 61.5 Real Estate 60.0 Finance And Insurance 58.3 Wellness Thats bull shit. First, notice the average DA of Any Industry is above 55. When was 80 an average? Secondly, they are saying that on average a site like John Hopkins Hospital will have a lower DA then a site about the World Wrestling Federation? 67 vs 75 average DA by Healthcare vs Sports site. Hows that make sense? Do government sites fall into the list? Like what do we assume the FBI.gov site’s DA should be? 100? No, it is a 91. Apparently there authority is not that of TMZ.com which is a 92. Where does Snapchat fall? How is it that the average Health DA is 67 and the largest hospital network in my state gets a 52? Healthcare is huge in my area … the first heart transplant and the first hand transplant came from here. But the largest provider is below average? If there is an average here … does that seriously attempt to suggest that about half of the sites online are above DA60 ? Cause thats extremely high for any actual company that I’ve looked into. No these numbers are just way inflated. Creating A Sample Size For Average DA and CF, TF I’ll go ahead and make some numbers here using a wide range of hundreds of domains. You can see the values below, check the methodology of the sample in the accordions. Method Open the accordion to learn how I came up with what I’ll call our sample of websites. Sampling was from So lets try another way thats semi random but provides us websites. First I’ll put in websites for everything on my desk. I didn’t plan to look up usedcardboardboxes.com but I have a marker here on my desk so it goes in. That will give us several dozens sites. We’ll also toss in …

Auto Posting Across Social Media Platforms – IFTTT – Buffer.com

I hate missing out just as much as anyone else.  Its why Ultimate SEO has accounts on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Tumblr, Pinterest, Flickr, Youtube, Blogger, Instagram, SnapChat and more.  This article is not about auto blogging  we have some great info on that posting content to multiple sites or ingesting content onto your site. It is in our free auto blogger article.  This discusses postings to social media accounts.  Wanting consistency and mass promotion of content on as many external social media platforms as possible with as few logins and actual posts as possible. But the only thing worse than not being on a platform is to not appear active on that platform. If someone’s first impression of you or your company is your activity on a forgotten profile it is more damaging than not having been there to begin with.SEO And SMM or SMOThis little bit as on semantics.  What does one call the practice of posting efficiently to social media. If that isn’t interesting to you, skip a head to SEO is the term we usually extend to the greater works of Digital Marketing of which SEO is just a part.  Search Engine Optimization or SEO is likely the most known of four distinct domains with specific use and often specific practitioners.  Digital Marketing Digital Marketing: SEO SEM SMO SMM PDF Version Of Image

In the image above we have the distinct areas of Digital Marketing.  Defined largely by two factors … the target audience and the use of optimization or paying for results. If the target is Search Engine users and the efforts are not paid but optimization then its SEO.  If the target is the same but the efforts are paid, for instance PPC then the work is SEM or Search Engine Marketing. If the target is Social Media and the efforts are paid then the work falls under SMM or Social Media Marketing but if the efforts are not paid then its SMO of Social Media Optimization. An example is ensuring your page loads fast and the proper keywords are indexable on that page, that is SEO.  But if you pay Adwords $1 a click to display your listing it is SEM. Why The Complexity Depending upon the type of digital marleting the manner of executing the task correctly is often unique to that domain of Digital Marketing. Due to the differences in approach often you’ll find Digital Marketers that are more suited for SEO vs. SMO or SEM vs SMM.As the skillsets are different usually so are the practitioners. Beware of the jack of all trades, master of none.  While a screwdriver, a hammer, measuring tape and a wrench are all tools … each one has a specific use.Consistency Within SEO and SMOWhen an article is posted to a site its often promoted through unpaid social media posts at the same time.  Tweeting “Ultimate SEO’s New Blog Entry Is Up. SEO and SMO collide to make SERPS.” is a best practice. Consistency with in these two domains of digital marketing is …

Link Building: Site Directories

An easy way to build backlinks is through directory submissions. Anything hard though is worth more, so keep in mind directory submissions don’t carry the weight that in content links will. With that said there is still diluted value in link directories, just don’t focus on them. Here are some link directories and they are organized by SEO power. The button below opens a new window with about 100 sites. We also have the following directory sites maintained by Ultimate SEO and these are always free to list with. PBNs 2019 – Domain Detailing – Picking Expired Domains And 301 Redirects

In PBNs 2019 Part 1 we discussed some logistics of organization on a high level concerning Cloudflare, Spreadsheets and above all randomness.  In this the second part of our private blog network series we’ll focus on expired domains and the assessing of their value. Domain Authority Is One Part First, we will look at Domain Authority but before we do lets note Domain Authority in and of itself is worthless.  It IS NOT used by Google.  It is made by a company called Moz and it is their best guest how Google interrupts the content on a site based on a lot of factors but not all the factors and not in the same ratio.  Why do we use it then?  Google doesn’t have to tell us their formula for ranking a site in their results…in fact to do so would likely be a disservice to everyone involved.  So based on observation and conjecture Moz provides us with an imperfect rating called Domain Authority.  It is though in the end a made up number that is flawed.  It was so flawed that DA 2.0 came out in March 2019 where many sites saw their rating plummet.  Search results didn’t change … why would they when they are not connected to DA.  Now thats out of the way… Expired Domains We should start with https://expireddomains.net its a good site that has aggregated the domains being deleted from multiple registrars and it provides some base metrics that we can use to qualify domains for a closer look.  There are millions of deleted domain names and we need someway to filter them down to something you can work with. Why do we care about expired domains?  Your PBN is attempting to mlmic organically earned backlinks.  In the real world backlinks would likely come from sites that have their own backlink profiles and no two organic sites would likely have the same backlink profile.  Buying a new domain name will come with 0 backlinks.  Buying a used one will likely include some backlinks therefore giving your PBN its power.  Think of these like telephone numbers…and you want someone to call you…you wont want to use the old number of someone who didn’t have any friends, but if you get a popular person’s old number then your phone is more likely to ring.  Sure they are after the former owner ( or site in our case ) but if you can answer their questions and keep them happy they may keep calling.  Same with expired domains. Another site that focuses on expired domains is domcop.com.  They are expensive and I’ve never used them because I can do all the work it does pretty swiftly and save the 100 dollars a month.  Sure they have a cheaper plan but you cant do anything with it.  Access to the expired section and archived section isn’t included …. making it relatively worthless.  Back to expireddomains.net its free.  Once we log in we can choose filters to sort down to …

Creating A Private Blog Network: PBNs In 2019 For SEO

First and foremost the most important aspect of your Private Blog Network is randomness.  Consider what pattern or foot print your PBN might have and avoid that commonality. Patterns and commonality to avoid in building a Private Blog Network Good PBNs Are Random, Start With Different Name Registrars First off you need private domain registration, if not private then you’ll need people and addresses from all over.  If you always use Godaddy you’re going to have to try out others to avoid a pattern.  Incidentally if you always use Godaddy you’re getting ripped off as they will charge you for privacy and many others don’t.  Some popular Name Registrars are 1and1.com namesilo.com namecheap.com cosmotown.com each of these can save you a considerable amount over Godaddy considering they offer free private registration and using more than one breaks a pattern. Each time you add a new site to your PBN you need to approach it from the beginning as if you’re playing a character in a story who has never made a website before, when I say that I mean if you know you have a site on Host A and you like that host you’re making decisions based on previous sites and are more likely to create a pattern.  Forget Host A how would you find a host for the first time?  Google popular web hosts and pick a cheap new partner. One thing that’s really beneficial about building PBNs that is more helpful to you in the long run is the forced exploration.  After you’ve built ten sites on ten hosts using ten registrars and ten WordPress themes you’ll be able to write three top ten lists and rank the best of the 720 combinations that were available to you.  It’s a lot of practice and as you’re avoiding patterns and repetition you’ll find yourself stepping out of your norm. Vary Your Web Hosts Speed of a web host is important normally but not necessarily when your building a PBN.  While you want your primary or money site to load in under 3 seconds its perfectly fine if your PBN site loads in 7 seconds and that opens the door to all manner of generic no name web hosts.   Your primary goal with multiple web hosts is to utilize a different IP address. Considering the complexity that can quickly arise when seeking randomness of your sites. The only two big issues with this model … Organization OF PBN Resources What site is down?  Oh….well which domain registrar did I use?  Am I using their nameservers, someone else’s?  Where did I point that to be hosted?  Sure these aren’t that annoying to answer with a 10 site network, but try answering it when you’ve built and scaled up to 200 sites using 7 registrars, 20 name servers, 150 different IPs … it becomes unmanageable as you find yourself searching for your site more than you are building new sites, and why are you having to search?  Maintaining a site is …

Bad Backlinks: 100 Sites You Don’t Want A Backlink From.

UPDATE: 2020 – So the bad backlinks list hasn’t gotten shorter but my advice on the Disavow Tool is different than in 2019.  Originally I took the official Google answer and repeated it: “Don’t use the disavow tool unless you know of manual action taken against your domain” but … I’ve never been one to just say okay and believe it.  I need to test things and see it for myself. Prior to this experiment, I’d say that I was under the impression that using the disavow tool was dangerous.  It still is so proceed with caution. The statement in “” above is only a good one if we can trust that Google is smart enough to realize that you didn’t pay 350 sites in Sweden to link to you on a page with 10,000 other site’s links.  That would be dumb to do, so I assumed Google knew I didn’t do it.  That they wouldn’t penalize a site on theglobe.net or its hundreds of other crap domains. I was wrong, I think.  I disavowed theglobe.net’s 350 sites and overall I saw a steady improvement across the board in keyword performance. So should you disavow bad backlinks?  We’ll my answer is: Google says not to unless you are under manual action, thats probably because they don’t want you to screw it up.  I personally have used the tool and believe it was beneficial to my site. I disavowed hundreds of sites while not under manual action and SEO performance improved afterwards.  It was not immediate, it started about a month after and steadily thereafter. Disavow Template With that noted I’ll share with you my disavow file.  This might serve as a template for any site, and regardless of if you have a backlink from all of these sites it may be worth leaving them in the list in case you do get a backlink from them. Disavow Tool Template Additionally I’ll add these domains and others I run across at the bottom of this post. Bad Backlinks UltimateSEO.org has backlinks from about a thousand domains.  In a recent review of these I found an odd reoccurring link from multiple domains but all with the same content and titles.  I was introduced with “The Globe” which charges sites to NOT list them or makes money from SEOs paying them to not backlink to them.  At $36 a link they’re likely insane and I bet its bringing in some money.  But before we go all crazy and start paying Ransomlinks (if its not a word I claim it … Ransomlinks are backlinks from bad sites meant to lower your SEO score unless you pay to not be linked too.) In reviewing the situation I ran across a list of the most disavowed sites.  I figured Id share that with you below, but before I do what outcome did I choose for these bad links pointed to my site?
  1. Option 1 Pay: Heck No! Then the terrorists win.
  2. Disavow: No! Don’t use …

Free Auto Blogger / Autoblogger Plugins Using RSS For WordPress Sites

Auto blogging can mean a few closely related but distinct things.
  • It could be that you have a blog and just want relevant content regularly added but don’t want to have to write it and post it yourself.
  • Or it could be that you have several sites that you want to post the same thing too but only from one place.  Content Syndication is a term I apply n these cases.
  • Finally, you may want to blog about automobiles, this article isn’t for you.
The good news is that this page covers the first two aspects of auto blogging and we’re going to cover how you can accomplish this free.  (Unless you want our help implementing it then it’s free after the setup) There are more ways that auto blogging can be used and if you have a different scenario you’re welcome to let me know and I’ll see what I can come up with for you.  Pop over to the contact page and share your auto blogging need. With the two use cases described above you’ll need slightly different processes but you can achieve these and if needed we can do it for you. I say process because these are actually a somewhat complicated series of events that might require the use of two or more tools we’ll discuss shortly. Auto Blogging Use Case 1: You have a blog and want it to automatically post relevant content that you don’t have to write. It’s important to post new content for your site regularly.  I recommend to my clients once a week.  Sites that do this get visited more often by both Google and visitors because they know that something new is likely waiting for them. It also helps show you are running an active site and the content isn’t outdated. A Free Plugin For Auto Blogging CyberSyn (AKA CyberSEO and CyberSEO Lite) doesn’t know I’m writing anything on them and this isn’t a paid endorsement, I use their product on about 100 domains and its worked perfectly for me, it’s a free full text RSS feed to post WordPress plugin available through the WordPress plugin repository.  Most RSS Feed to Post programs don’t work or only do half of the needed process for free.  CyberSyn does it all. Now I noted multiple names for them, and they have multiple solutions that are great in their own way.  CyberSEO 7 is their latest and greatest paid plugin but they also offer CyberSEO 6 for free which remains a feature rich option. Install this plugin on your site and find RSS feeds that would compliment your site’s content.  I generally like a varied mix of feeds so I’ll pick 3 or 4 different site’s RSS feeds and add them.  Depending on what works for your case schedule and set the options for the feeds. I usually set the clock to check each site once every 5000 to 10000 seconds, thats usually just about or just over once a week. Now be …

  • What To Do With Your Political Site After The Election

Its something farthest from your mind, I’m sure.  If you’re working for a political campaign you’re pushing forward and the next 5 weeks are all out war ahead.  What to do with your campaign site after the election?  Heck I suspect some of you are just now getting around to your website, or many feel it hasn’t helped in the past so no need to worry.  You’d be wrong if you fall into either of those mindsets, if you’re the diligent one you’ll find the rewards are like a garden. I started renting a house in my hometown after returning
  • SEO: How long does it take to rank #1 on Google?

It Takes About 3 Months To 6 Months To Rank #1 On Google In the world of politics everything seems to be able the last week of an election, after that its over.  In the business world you have to keep going after a certain defined date to remain in business.  Political SEO requires keeping in mind the business world because in Google ranking they are your biggest competitors and the other candidate is likely just as I was talking with a politico kind of friend in the last two days about the need in getting in contact with any
  • What Is Domain Authority Why Should I Care?

Domain Authority is in my opinion the single greatest indicator of a sites ability to compete organically for search traffic.  It is a great question and its simply complex.  Keep in mind Domain Authority or DA as we shall refer to it pretty much here on is the single best number to predict ranking ability and we know that the top 3 positions consume over half of all searches so it can be directly attached to traffic. A few disclaimers: Domain Authority is not a Google creation it is from Moz.com and it is their educated guess at how

Multi-Domain Strategy In SEO So I feel like its everyone's dream to be a media conglomerate, why buy one newspaper when you can buy 100s?  Well, SEO and the internet are one big community...so in the analogy ... why build multiple newspapers in the same city?  No one would do that and it's about the same with the internet or at least it should be...but everyone wants to have multiple top ranking domains. Real Life Examples Of Multiple Domains There is only two ways this could work out... Your brand is merging with another equally powerful and recognized brand

Tracert in SEO: Can Help Ya Track Your 301 Redirects Tracert is a command thats elementary to networking and computers.  Trace Route or Tracert does exactly what it sounds like, and its useful cause it tells ya every ip address it passes through between the server and the catcher (not technical terms there).  It explains where speed issues are in a global perspective or in your home. • How To Rank Your Site On Google…Forget the Keywords

How To Rank Your Site On Google...Forget the Keywords Well don't totally forget the keywords but I think if you spend more than 5 minutes on keywords you're going to be pretty surprised by some purported data I stumbled across.  As you likely know Google uses about 200 factors in determining your sites ranking.  I personally have place a lot of emphasis on speed and backlinks and while I have thought it was important I must admit I didn't give the social media factor as much attention as I should. The first big thing to not is that 10.3% of
  • PBNs: Private Blog Network – The Crack Habit Of SEO

First off, lets note that PBNs are not viewed well in traditional SEO and are hunted like witches in Massachusetts in the 1600s.  They must be large to matter, having anywhere between 20 to several thousand sites. They are the equivalent of building dozens of WordPress sites taking hours and hours from other SEO opportunities. They work. What Are Private Blog Networks? Private or Personal Blog Networks, PBNs are sites built with the purpose of providing backlinks to another site.  This other site is often called "the money site."  Google is known to be hostile to these sites and prone
  • Backlinks 101 – SEO’s Off-page Often Ignored Power Ranker

Backlinks 101 First off a little disclosure this article over laps the Backlinks category of the FAQ. What Are Backlinks? Backlinks are links from other sites.  Think of them as votes of affirmation.  Only one vote can come from a domain so for SEO purposes it doesn’t matter if there are 100 or 1 link from the same domain one link is the count you gain.  Subdomains are viewed separately...thats why yourblog.tumblr.com isn't a tumblr backlink.  Now those other links may increase traffic to your site but in regards to SEO value its one vote.  Some call this metric

  • Creating A Private Blog Network: PBNs In 2019 For SEO

Each PBN site will include registering the domain, setting the name servers and hosting the site. If you always use Godaddy you’re going to have to try out others to avoid a

It is made by a company called Moz and it is their best guest how Google interrupts the content on a site based on
  • Link Building: Site Directories

An easy way to build backlinks is through directory submissions.  Anything hard though is worth more, so keep in mind directory submissions don’t carry the weight that in content links will.  With that said there is still diluted value in link directories, just don’t focus on them. Here are some link directories and they are organized by SEO power. The button below opens a new window with about 100 sites. • Is A Site Low Level? DA vs CF vs TF … DR, DS, AS, TS and more!

What to do with a low ranking site? I was asked a seemingly simple question by a client today. Should low level sites he owns be scrapped and used for their backlinks by 301 redirecting the sites. Simplest Answer: I think it's hard to quantify if a site is low level. Ultimateseo.org has a DA 19, that seems pretty low. But keep in mind it used to be a DA 40 before Moz changed it's scoring. Keep also in mind that change in scoring showed no reflection in the site's ranking. I recommend 301 redirecting based on anchor text
